The M5 might not be the original super sedan. It was not even the first Hot 5 series. But just as the GTI is synonymous with the hot hatch segment, the M5 became the standard by which all other supersedans were measured after it hit the scene in 1985. A 280-plus horsepower beefy suspension upgrade from the race-derived M88/3 and huge (for the time) alloy wheels mated to a limited-slip differential. At a time when "fast" cars had 180 horsepower, the first M-offering in BMW's sedan range might as well have been a spaceship.

BMW promised limited production for the US market as well – and indeed, only 1,239 were produced for the US with the S38. Unfortunately, this was 700 more than BMW had promised, and it led to a lawsuit. It wasn't long before the M5's reign was eclipsed. First through its replacement E34 model, then the entire range of new V8 models on the market, from the 1992 Audi V8 quattro to the 500E. Values fell quickly as these old-looking (even when new) boxy rockets fell out of favor, and they stayed there for a long time.
But recently there has been a greater appreciation for all things 80s M, and although the E30 has grabbed the headlines as the market star, outside of the M1 it's the E28 M5 that was brought here in very few numbers. . Even fewer have survived, and clean, low-mile examples can be hard to find. This seems to tick the right boxes..
